New Project Ideas – Tip #6 (Kitchen Remodels)

I want a new Kitchen, but need more space too!

In my New Project Ideas – Tip # 1, I discussed several ways to update your kitchen with quick little ideas that can add new life to your tired Kitchen. But what if small changes are not going to do it to help out your kitchen needs? Sometimes an existing kitchen is just not going to work and it needs to be redone!

Obviously, kitchen remodels can run the gambit of all your thoughts, and since it would be too easy (if you have plenty of extra room on your lot) to just blow out the walls of your home and add the desired square footage, I will be addressing some thoughts while keeping the existing footprint the same.

I have been talking to several people recently about needing more space in their kitchen, but do not have space to expand the house. This can sometimes seem problematic, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of your dream kitchen reality. In most cases, there is usually the ability to expand the size of the kitchen by taking up space from an under-utilized dining room or breakfast room. This can create plenty of space for the kitchen you need, and by infusing the proper layout, you can still have the function of those lost rooms or spaces.

Even stealing some space from the living room does not make it necessarily feel smaller, it can actually make it feel BIGGER by eliminating walls or by using a transitioning island to make the space function way better than old, compartmentalized architecture.

Lastly, often times old kitchens will have lowered ceilings and light boxes that make everything feel cramped. By taking those out and adding beautiful lighting, the space can really open up and as an added bonus, with that extra height and new LED lighting options, the heat of the kitchen can also be a thing of the past.

Even if you have a small house, it does not mean you have to have a small kitchen or have to sacrifice the rest of your home to have the kitchen of your dreams.  So, it actually is possible to make your kitchen bigger without adding anything to the existing footprint and still make your home feel and act like you added on a whole new wing! The added value to your house will be great, but feeling like you are living in a new home will be FANTASTIC!!

Check out this recent remodel that I used these thoughts to take a house that had a chopped up floor plan to create not just a bigger kitchen, but made it much more functional for today’s entertainment style.
